Protecting Your Privacy: Submetering Data in Ontario

Your electricity consumption data is personal information. In Ontario, submetering providers are required to handle this data in accordance with applicable privacy legislation. Understanding how your data is collected, used, and protected helps you make informed decisions.

Submetering providers collect consumption data from the meter installed in your suite. This data records how much electricity your suite uses over each metering interval (typically hourly or more frequently). This data is used to calculate your bill and is retained for billing and regulatory purposes.

In Ontario, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) governs how private sector organizations collect, use, and disclose personal information. Your submetering provider must comply with PIPEDA requirements, including collecting data only for identified purposes, protecting data with appropriate security measures, providing access to your data upon request, and retaining data only as long as necessary for the identified purposes.

Your submetering provider should not share your individual consumption data with your landlord, property manager, or condo board in a way that identifies your specific suite without your consent. Aggregated or anonymized data (for example, total building consumption or average consumption by floor) can be shared without identifying individual suites.

If you want to access your own consumption data, you have the right to request it from your submetering provider. This data can be useful for understanding your usage patterns, budgeting, or supporting applications for assistance programs.

Voltage Vision takes data privacy seriously. We collect and use consumption data only for billing and service delivery purposes. Our privacy policy, available on our website, provides detailed information about our data practices. If you have questions about how your data is handled, our customer service team can help.
